About Geosmina Bikepacking Bags

We've been busily testing much of the 2022 Geosmina bikepacking range - we run through the options and what we like so far.

From a small town northwest of Madrid (Hoyo de Manzanares) comes a relative newcomer to the bikepacking scene: Geosmina. It’s not a household name yet, but we expect that’ll change as more of their product enters the Aussie market and the distance-chewing-dirt-napping faithful get their hands on it.

Geosmina’s second generation of bags has landed at Acium, and we love it. It balances features, thoughtful design, and comes at a highly competitive price. The devil is in detail with bikepacking bags, where small design choices can add up to a better experience when you’re dirty, hungry, and tired from a day of chewing up miles. We’ve been road-testing the new gear, and below is a quick range overview and early impressions.

FRAME BAGS

The frame bag has two variations: the “MTB” designed for the internal triangle profile that tapers at the head tube, and the “Gravel” designed for the more standard drop-bar frames.

I’ve been testing the Medium Gravel Frame Bag on two bikes with different geometries and tube profiles - the bag fits neither frame perfectly but manages to work on both, thanks to the spare set of straps that Geosmina includes. The longer straps are perfect for the beefy, flattened tube profiles of the Winspace G2 whereas the shorter straps easily fit the round tubes of the Bossi Grit SX.

There are nine strap slots in total; four attaching to the top tube, one each for the seat and head tubes, and two for the down tube. Those options make set-up much easier because you can move conflicting straps or remove some straps completely.

The bag is vertically divided in an 80/20 split, allowing larger items (food, tools, gloves etc.) to fit on the right and thin items (phone, wallet, credit cards) sliding in on the left. I’ve been happy with the ease of fitting accessibility while riding with thanks to the smooth-sliding zipper.

SADDLE BAG

Geosmina kept the saddle bag range simple: just 10 and 15-litre choices.

The 10l Small Saddle Bag accompanies me on lighter adventures; carrying enough for shorter duration bikepacking. It’s a standard design; two straps grasping the seatpost, two slotting through the saddle rails, and the last two cranking down the side of the bag. It’s fully waterproof too, which is a feature I’d encourage everyone to invest in to keep your spare clothes dry when it’s hosing with rain!

The Large 15l Saddle Bag is more suited for your longer adventures that demand more carrying capacity. The design largely is the same as the 10l but with some elongation.

HANDLEBAR BAGS

Geosmina has a triple-threat of handlebar bags across the small, medium and large sizes.

Beginning with the Small Handlebar Bag which is quite generous at 3.5 litres in capacity. It sits rather nicely on my wide bar setup - pictured below on some 52 cm Ritchey Venturemax and the roll-top design makes it both easy to pack and access when you need to dive for snacks. The roll-top does make it inadvisable to open up while in motion though. Certainly a solid option for a multi-day drop-bar adventures where you don’t want to overload the handlebars.

At the wider end of the range is the Medium Handlebar Bag; a classic 10l roll-ended design and the Harness Roll Bag; a harness and monster 15l dry bag. Both bags are fully waterproof and make me want to go bikepacking just to test them out! I’ve always liked carrying light cylindrical items in these bags, sleeping bags and bivvy for example, because they’re relatively bulky but not heavy enough to ruin your steering. The cradle and dry bag combo design is a great option for those who like to pack and unpack their bags off the bike.

FORK BAGS AND CAGES

The first generation Cargo Cage and Bag absolutely flew out the Acium door because they are competitively priced. The second generation Cargo Fork Cage & Bag is here, and an improved 5.5l waterproof nylon bag comes with it. The Anything Cage is still mountable to standard 3-bolt fork mounts but also ships with stainless steel clamps and protective foam to make it fix onto just about any fork.

The cage works with Voile straps for strapping a bottle of Pinot Noir onto the fork for a more aristocratic bikepacking experience*.

*probably don't do this...

TOP TUBE AND CHAFF BAGS

Keeping your stem company are bolt-on and strappy top tube bage (with small and large size variants) and Stem Pouch Bag. We haven’t had a chance to test these out quite yet but we look forward to filling them with Ginger Nut biscuits and riding into the sunset.
